Start of the armed resistance to Spanish Habsburg rule which is to last eighty years and will eventually lead to the establishment of an independent Dutch Republic. The revolt is led by Prince William of Orange, ancestor of the present Queen Beatrix. Although known as the Eighty Yearsí War, the period is not in fact one of continuous armed conflict.
